The OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones will receive updates to Android O, but the OnePlus 2 has been abandoned.
(CCM) — The popular budget OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T handsets will be getting updates to the next version of Android, the Chinese smartphone-maker has confirmed. Android O, as the update is known until its official moniker is announced, is expected to be released later this summer. Yesterday, OnePlus founder Pete Lau tweeted: "A lot of you have been asking, so I'm proud to say Android O will come to OnePlus 3 and 3T."
Lau did not specify a specific timescale for the update, but past schedules suggest that Android O will be available for the devices about four months after Google releases the new operating system version.
However, the news for owners of OnePlus's older devices is not so good. A company customer support representative recently revealed that the OnePlus 2 will not be receiving an update to Android Nougat, the current version of Google's mobile operating system. Instead they will have to be satisfied with the ageing Android Marshmallow. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had previously indicated that the OnePlus 2 would receive an Android Nougat update at some point.
The company is expected to launch its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 5, in about two weeks time.
