The social media giant is reportedly working on a new smart speaker similar to Amazon's Echo Show.
(CCM) — After Google and Amazon, Facebook seems to be the next contender in a battle to create the best smart speaker. The social media giant is reportedly working on a smart speaker with a 15-inch touchscreen display. It will most likely be a direct rival to Amazon's Echo Show speaker with a similar setup.
According to a report from DigiTimes, Facebook will be launching the smart speaker in early 2018. The speaker is reportedly in the works at Facebook's consumer hardware lab located in Building 8. It will be manufactured by Pegatron and will most likely hit sales shelves in the first quarter of 2018.
Interestingly, Building 8 at Facebook is headed by former Google executive, Regina Dugan. Building 8 is responsible for shipping consumer hardware to millions of users. It is also tasked with futuristic projects relating to Artificial Intelligence and other transformative technologies. Facebook is consistently hiring more technical staff for Building 8 and is suspected of working on more consumer products, other than a modular phone and smart speaker. The upcoming smart speaker may not have a voice assistant and is expected to depend on the display functionalities for carrying out tasks.
