Spyware Scare Halts Blu Phone Sales
Amazon has put all sales of Blu phones on hold because of fears that they may contain data-stealing spyware

(CCM) — Amazon has put a freeze on all sales of phones made by handset-maker Blu because of concerns that they may contain data-stealing spyware, the International Business Times is reporting. "Because security and privacy of our customers is of the utmost importance, all Blu phone models have been made unavailable for purchase on Amazon.com until the issue is resolved," the company said in a statement.

The move follows the allegation made by security firm Kryptowire that some Blu devices were infected with spyware from a Chinese company called Shanghai Adups Technology. Kryptowire made the claim at the Black Hat Security conference in Las Vegas last week.

It said that the spyware was collecting information such as call logs, location details, and text messages from the phones and transmitting it to computers in China, according to the report. Kryptowire did not say what the company was doing with the information gathered by its software.

Blu makes ultra-low cost Android phones and was one of the participants in Amazon's "Prime Exclusive Phones" program. This enabled Amazon Prime members to buy phones at discounted prices in return for agreeing to allow advertisements to appear on their phones' lock screens.
