Owners of OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T devices will get no major software updates after Android O.
(CCM) — OnePlus has cast a huge shadow over the future of its OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T handsets by confirming that it will not release any operating system updates for them after Android O has been rolled out, Tech Times is reporting. The news was given out during a Q and A session about OnePlus's smartphone lineup.
The move has been interpreted by some as a cynical way of encouraging owners of the two older devices to upgrade to the new flagship OnePlus 5 handset. Since both are only about one year old they could reasonably be expected to be capable of running the next two or even three versions of Android, the Tech Times report points out.
But OnePlus does not plan to abandon the phones completely, according to Oliver Z, OnePlus's head of product. "We'll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates," he said in the report.
Google is expected to release public builds of Android O in the next few weeks. Although the official release date has not been announced, it is widely expected before the end of the year.
