A senior Samsung executive says that the company is working on a smart speaker similar to Amazon's Echo.
(CCM) — Samsung has finally confirmed that it has a smart speaker featuring its Bixby AI in the works, to compete with rival products from Amazon, Google, and Apple, CNBC reports.
The news comes straight from the mouth of DJ Koh, Samsung's mobile division president. "Maybe soon we will announce it. I am already working on it," Koh told CNBC. "I wanted to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices, and I want to be moving quite heavily on it," Koh added.
Koh may have been alluding to the fact that Samsung plans to create an entire Samsung ecosystem in the home, with appliances such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, and TVs all able to talk to each other under the control of Bixby. The company's Galaxy S8 and Note8 devices already have a feature called Bixby Home which allows Bixby to control their appliances.
The Korean-language version of Bixby was launched in May of this year, but the American English-language version was delayed and was only made available in the U.S. in July. Earlier this week Bixby was launched in 200 more countries around the world, and the company expects to launch a Chinese-language version in the next few months.
