Zuckerberg Reins In Public Content
Facebook plans a cull of posts from brands and businesses so users spend less time on the service.

(CCM) — Facebook's founder has embarked on a major shake-up of the social network which he says will result in people spending less time using the service.

Mark Zuckerberg explained in a blog post that public content such as posts from brands, businesses, and media is "crowding out" interactions between users and their friends and family, and he quotes research which says that this is not good for their well-being.

"Based on this, we're making a major change to how we build Facebook. I'm changing the goal I give our product teams from focusing on helping you find relevant content to helping you have more meaningful social interactions," he said.

"By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down. But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable," he added.

Zuckerberg said that the changes will take months to take effect, but they will first be noticeable in News Feed where users can expect to see more from their friends, family, and groups.

He did not mention advertising content and whether the company plans to reduce this as well to help users focus on interacting with people who are important to them.
