Apple is working on two new versions of its wireless headphones, including a water resistant model.
(CCM) — Apple is planning to release a more powerful version of its AirPod wireless headphones later this year, according to a Bloomberg report.
The new AirPods, known as B288, will enable users to summon Siri, Apple's digital assistant, by saying "Hey Siri" — bringing it into line with the iPhone, Apple Watch, and HomePod speaker. The current AirPods require users to tap the headphones to attract Siri's attention. The new version will also use Apple's latest W2 wireless chip for managing Bluetooth connections more efficiently.
The report adds that Apple is also in the early stages of designing a third generation of AirPods, due for release next year, which will be water resistant to survive heavy rain and splashes. However, it is not envisaged that they will be designed to be fully submerged in water or used while swimming, surfing, or playing water sports.
Apple is also believed to be on schedule to start selling its AirPower wireless charging mat through its own Apple Stores next month. The AirPower was inveiled alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone X in September 2017, and it can be used to charge iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods simultaneously.
Apple has not yet revealed prices for the new AirPods or the AirPower charging mat.
