Apple-branded wireless over-ear headphones are in the works for a possible 2018 release.
(CCM) — Apple is planning a land-grab in the high-end headphone market with Apple branded over-ear headsets which will launch as early as the end of this year, according to a Bloomberg report.
The new headphones, which have been under development for the past year, will feature noise cancelling technology to rival the offerings of market leaders such as Bose, Sennheiser, and Sony. They will also use the same wireless technology as the company's Airpods to provide quick and easy pairing with iPhones and other Apple devices.
There is still some uncertainty about when the Apple headphones will be launched, in part because it has faced "development challenges" which might result in a delay until 2019, the report says.
Apple already dominates the wireless headphone market, accounting for 50% of all sales thanks to its Airpods and Beats headphones, according to NPD Group. When the Apple-branded headphones are released the company is expected to continue offering its lower-priced Beats headphones, which it acquired as part of a $3 billion deal in 2014 and which target the mid-range market.
The headphone market is growing rapidly around the world and is expected to be worth $20 billion in annual sales by 2023, according to Research and Markets.
