A Pixel watch and two new Pixel smartphones are in the offing, according to a reliable source.
(CCM) — Google plans to turn up the heat on Apple's Watch by launching a Pixel smartwatch later this year, according to Evan Blass, a reliable industry tipster. Google will also launch two new smartphones and other hardware at the same time, according to Blass.
"Besides the Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, and second-gen Pixel Buds, a reliable source tells me – with high confidence – that Google's fall hardware event will also introduce a Pixel-branded watch. Have a great summer!" Blass said in a Tweet from his @evleaks account.
Last year Google held its fall hardware event on October 4, 2017, so the new devices are likely to be unveiled this year in late September or early October.
A Pixel watch is expected to run Google's WearOS (formally Android Wear) operating system, which up to now has failed to make a significant impact on the market. Even Samsung, the world's largest supplier of Android smartphones, rejected WearOS in favor of its own Tizen operating system for its popular Gear S3 smartwatch.
If the Pixel watch fails to find traction amongst consumers then Google may well be tempted to ditch WearOS completely, but if the watch proves popular then it could finally start to gain significant market share in the wearables market.
