The Core i7-8086K chip will be the fastest consumer desktop chip ever made.
(CCM) — Intel has produced a limited edition 5GHz i7 processor to mark the fortieth anniversary of the launch of the 8086 processor and the x86 architecture upon which the modern PC was built.
To celebrate this anniversary, the company has announced that it will give away 8,086 of the limited run of 50,000 Core i7-8086K chips in a free-to-enter sweepstake. 2,086 of these will be available to be won in the U.S.
The giveaway is only open to residents of the U.S., Germany, France, Canada (excluding Quebec), the United Kingdom, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and China (excluding Hong Kong) who are 18 or older on the entry date.
The new processor is Intel's first 5Ghz consumer desktop processor, although it is unlocked for overclocking, and it features six cores and 12 threads. According to its specifications it will be Intel's fastest consumer desktop chip ever.
The remainder of the run of chips after the sweepstakes are likely to be available in limited quantities from Intel's regular retail partners. Although Intel has not mentioned an official price, the sweepstake states that the average retail value of the processor is $425. The processor will be supplied in special commemorative packaging celebrating the anniversary.
