Instagram Gives Stories a Soundtrack

Instagram Gives Stories a Soundtrack
Users can now choose from thousands of songs to accompany their Stories pictures.

(CCM) — Instagram is putting the pressure on rival Snapchat by adding a "Soundtrack" feature to Stories.

The new feature allows users to add music to their Stories by tapping on the new music sticker which can be accessed from the editing add-ons folder, and choosing a background music track. They can then choose a precise point in the track to start to play from, and when friends view the Story they will hear the music from the cued point.

Instagram will allow users to choose from a library of "thousands" of music tracks, according to a CNBC report, and many of these will be some of the first fruits of Facebook's recent licensing deals with several music labels.

"Soundtrack" will roll out first to iOS users of the Instagram app in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, and Sweden.

Instagram's Stories has twice as many active users as Snapchat's Stories, according to the report. Instagram says that its Stories has up to 400 million daily users, compared to the 191 million daily active users that Snapchat's Stories enjoyed according to Snap's most recent quarterly report.
