Apple About to Overtake Spotify in U.S.
Apple has caught up with Spotify in the U.S., but Spotify still dominates the global music streaming market.

(CCM) — Apple Music is poised to overtake Spotify to become the number one service in the U.S. streaming market and will assume the mantle by the end of next month, according to a Financial Times report.

The news will come as a blow to Spotify, which has been a music streaming pioneer that, until recently, dominated the music streaming landscape.

The report says that Spotify had 22 – 22.5 million subscribers in the U.S. as of last week, compared to 21 – 21.5 million Apple music subscribers. But by the end of the year Apple is expected to have about 27 million U.S. subscribers, compared to just 24 million Spotify subscribers.

One reason for Apple's faster growth rate could be that Spotify's key market is younger music lovers who were early adopters of streaming, so most potential Spotify customers have already signed up. By contrast, Apple has a much wider potential customer base of (older) iPhone owners who may only now be becoming interested in a streaming service.

But Spotify is still by far the largest global music streaming service with a total of over 75 million paying customers around the world. Apple reported in May that it had about 50 million paying customers for Apple Music around the world.
