Instagram Shows When Friends Are Online
The service has introduced a presence indicator, similar to those used by messaging pioneers like ICQ and AOL.

(CCM) — Instagram has taken a leaf out of ICQ's and AOL Instant Messenger's playbooks from the 1990s by informing users when their friends are active on the service with a green status dot.

"DMing friends and connecting over the content you love is more fun when you know your friends are there to see it. This update gives you the ability to have more of those realtime conversations while giving you the control to hide your status altogether," the company said in a blog post announcing the new feature."

The green status dot will appear next to friends' profile pictures when they are using Instagram, and therefore available to chat. The dot will appear in several places within the Instagram app, including the Direct inbox, and the user's friend list when they share a post from feed. But users will only be able to see the status of friends who follow them, or of people that they have previously talked to in Direct.

To preserve privacy, users will be able to hide their status and turn off the ability to see status dots in the settings section of the app.
