Huawei Snatches Apple's Smartphone Spot
The Chinese smartphone maker is now second only to Samsung in the global market.

(CCM) — Huawei has wrestled the number two spot in the global smartphone market from Apple, according to Q2 sales figures compiled by research house Gartner.

The Chinese smartphone maker sold almost 50 million handsets during the three months to June 30, 2018, compared to Apple's 44.7 million iPhones, according to a Techcrunch report. Both companies lag far behind South Korean technology giant Samsung, which sold over 72 million smartphones including its flagship Galaxy S9.

One reason for Huawei's success has been its investment in technology and its wide range of handsets. "Huawei continues to bring innovative features into its smartphones and expand its smartphone portfolio to cover larger consumer segments," Anshul Gupta, a Gartner research director, said in the report.

But Apple's sales in the second quarter may well have been weakened because many potential Apple customers are waiting for September, when the new range of iPhones will be unveiled, before making a purchasing decision.

However, Apple is facing more intense pressure to innovate and produce new features to justify the iPhone's premium price than ever before, particularly from Chinese brands such as Huawei, along with fourth-placed Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo.
