Samsung Seeks Help For Bixby
Third-party developers may breath new life into Samsung's intelligent assistant.

(CCM) — Samsung is throwing the doors open to developers who are willing to build apps for Bixby, in a bid to give the intelligent assistant a boost.

Bixby was launched long after Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant, and lags far behind in terms of capabilities. So Samsung has decided to offer a software developer kit (SDK) and application programming interface (API) for Bixby, according to a CNBC report. This will enable third party software developers to create apps with Bixby built in, and to integrate existing apps with Bixby. They will be released at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco in November.

Amazon allows developers to create apps for Alexa, and over 30,000 have been made to date.

The benefit of this new approach to owners of Bixby-equipped Samsung devices is that third-party developers will help make Bixby more useful.
For Samsung, a more capable Bixby may help it boost sales of software and services as sales of its phone hardware slow down.

Last month the company announced that it intends to release the Galaxy Home Smart Speaker with Bixby built in, to compete in a marketplace dominated by Amazon's Echo and Google's Home smart speakers.
