Instagram Co-founders in Shock Departure
After six years of Facebook ownership, Instagram's co-founders appear to have had enough.

(CCM) — Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram, have jumped ship and abandoned the service, some six years after selling the company to Facebook in a $1 billion deal.

Some insiders believe the decision to leave the company stems from dissatisfaction with the direction that Facebook is taking the photo-sharing service, according to a BBC report. Facebook's focus has been on generating as much money as possible from Instagram by adding new features and advertisements, which some felt went against Instagram's original focus on simplicity, according to the report.

Under Facebook's ownership the service has also gained a reputation for copying features from rival Snapchat, and it has branched out into longer-form videos to compete with the likes of YouTube with the launch of IGTV.

But the pair expressed no ill-will to Facebook when they announced their departures. "Now it’s time for the next chapter. A huge thank you to everyone in the community who we’ve met along the way," Krieger said in a tweet.

The departures are not the first time that founders of companies acquired by Facebook have left the organization. In April WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum announced that he would leave the company, four years after Facebook acquired it in a $19 billion deal.
