WatchOS Update Bricks Apple Watches

WatchOS Update Bricks Apple Watches
Some users have found that their Apple Watch is stuck in a loop after attempting to update to WatchOS 5.1.

(CCM) — Apple has been forced to pull the latest watchOS 5.1 update just hours after releasing it, following numerous reports that customers' Apple Watches had been bricked when attempting to install it. Series 4 Watches may be the only devices affected.

The bricked watches get stuck with an Apple logo on the screen and cannot be restarted. Attempting to reboot the paired iPhone and Watch does not fix the problem, according to an Engadget report.

Apple has issued a statement saying: "Due to a small number of Apple Watch customers experiencing an issue while installing watchOS 5.1 today, we've pulled back the software update as a precaution. Any customers impacted should contact AppleCare, but no action is required if the update installed successfully. We are working on a fix for an upcoming software update."

WatchOS 5.1 offers enhanced fall detection. If it detects that the wearer has fallen and not moved after a short time then it can send a recorded message to emergency services providing location information. Previously the watch would send location information to a named emergency contact instead.

However it does not add electrocardiogram capabilities, a feature which Apple has promised to add before the end of the year.
