Amazon's Echos Now Make Skype Calls
Echo users can now say 'Alexa, call Dad on Skype' to make a call using Microsoft's calling platform.

(CCM) — Amazon Echo devices can now make and receive Skype calls, Microsoft has announced on its Skype blog.

Previously Echo owners could only use their devices to communicate using Amazon's own software, but now every Echo model except the original first generation Echo Dot will also be able to take advantage of Skype calling to other Skype users and regular telephone numbers. Echo devices with screens, such as the Echo Show, will also be able to make Skype video calls to other Skype users.

Calls can be initiated using voice commands such as "Alexa, call Big Al on Skype" or "Alexa, call 206-555-0155 on Skype.” Calls can be received by saying "Alexa, pick up."

Echo owners clearly benefit from the tie-up with Skype, but Microsoft also benefits by gaining a huge number of new potential users. This is important as the company has yet to gain any significant market share for devices that use its own smart assistant, Cortana.

Microsoft is offering Echo owners 200 free minutes of calls per month for two months to mobiles and landlines in 34 countries including the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. in the hope of persuading users to sign up for paid call plans.
