Instagram Botches Horizontal Test

Instagram Botches Horizontal Test
A test of horizontal scrolling was briefly released to a large number of Instagram users before being abandoned.

(CCM) — Instagram caused a furore among many of its users on Thursday by accidentally releasing a test update to its app, CNBC is reporting.

The horizontal scrolling feature under test was supposed to be released to a small number of Instagram users, but Adam Mosseri, Instragram's head of product, tweeted that it was supposed to be "a very small test but we went broader than we anticipated."

The change appears to have been very unpopular, with the Twitter hashtag #instagramupdate being the number one trending hashtag in the U.S. on that date. Many users complained that it made it harder to scroll past posts and advertisements that they did not want to read, according to the report.

The Facebook-owned company later released a statement saying: "Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today. We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion."

The update is reminiscent of the Snapchat redesign which was rolled out earlier this year. This proved so unpopular that it resulted in a petition of over one million signatories demanding that it be abandoned.
