App Store Enjoys Bumper Holiday Sales
Apple made record App Store sales on New Year's Day 2019, beating last year's takings by $30 million.

(CCM) — Apple customers around the world spent an astonishing $1.22 billion on apps and games at the company's App Store between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve 2018, and a staggering $322 million on New Year's Day 2019 alone, according to a Techcrunch report.

The New Year's Day sales figure was a new record for Apple, and was considerably higher than the $300 million taken on the same day in 2018.

During the holidays the company says that games and self-care apps were the most popular app categories, with Fortnite, PUBG, Brawl Stars, Asphalt 9, and Monster Strike being particularly successful.

After the turn of the year customers turned to health and fitness apps, perhaps to shake off the excesses of the previous week, along with educational and productivity apps, according to the report. Popular downloads included 1Password, Sweat, and Lumosity.

The holiday period is typically the App Store's busiest time, with many consumers loading recently acquired iPhones and iPads with software, and spending App Store gift cards that they have also received.

The strong App Store sales announcement comes in stark contrast to downbeat hardware sales guidance from Apple. In recent days the company said that it now expects sales of just $84 billion in the quarter just ended, considerably lower than its earlier estimate of $89 to $93 billion.
