DJI Launches Controller with Screen
The drone-maker's new controller has a brighter screen than most cellphones.

(CCM) — Leading drone-maker DJI has finally unveiled a controller with a built-in screen at CES in Las Vegas, enabling pilots to launch their aircraft without having to piggyback their controller on top of a separate smartphone screen.

The DJI Smart Controller has an integral 5.5-inch color screen that can display moving images streamed from a connected drone at full HD resolution, according to a Techcrunch report.

The screen is twice as bright as a typical smartphone screen, according to Mavic, and if true this will be a useful feature because details on smartphone screens are hard to see in bright sunlight. With the screen turned on, the controller battery should last about two and a half hours, the report adds, which is less than the battery life offered by the current controller and smartphone screen combination. However the new device means that drone pilots have one less device to keep charged, and flying a drone does not deplete their cellphone batteries.

The controller itself is powered by Android, according to the report, and supports DJI applications including DJI Go 4 and DJI Pilot.

The DJI Smart Controller is available now for $650, and it will also be bundled with some DJI drones including the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom.
