WhatsApp Limits Message Forwards to Kill Rumors

WhatsApp Limits Message Forwards to Kill Rumors
WhatsApp has imposed a limit on message forwards to avoid the spread of rumors on its platform.

(CCM) — According to a report by Reuters, WhatsApp has announced that it will be imposing a limit of five message forwards in its app.

Previously, WhatsApp users were able to forward a message to up to 20 individuals or groups. Moving forward, the five-message limit will be imposed globally.

The Facebook-owned company has stated that its motivation is to limit the spread of "misinformation and rumors" that have historically spread like wildfire throughout the app's global community. The app has repeatedly been blamed for the spread of fake news, manipulated photos, videos with context, and audio hoaxes. Due to WhatsApp's end-to-end user encryption, this content goes unchecked as it spreads throughout the app's 1.5-billion member network. It has previously taken action against fake news by integrating "forwarded" tags.

Starting Monday, WhatsApp will roll out updates to its app, starting with Android and followed by iOS.
