Nintendo's Mario Kart Tour smartphone game will now not be released until this summer at the earliest.

(CCM) — Nintendo's banana-flinging Mario Kart Tour smartphone game has run into difficulties, according to a Verge report.

The company announced the title a year ago and originally slated it for release before the end of March 2019, but now its release has been delayed until the summer. News of the delay will be met with dismay by hard-core Nintendo fans.

The company said that the decision to delay Mario Kart Tour's launch was made "in order to improve quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch" in its quarterly earnings statement released today.

The delay is consistent with the words of Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who is quoted in the report as saying: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."

Mario Kart Tour is Nintendo's second game to run into development delays this month, the report adds. Earlier this month Nintendo was forced to announce that its keenly-awaited Metroid Prime 4 title will be substantially delayed because its development had "not reached the standards we seek." The game's development has now been restarted from scratch using a new programming team.
