Amazon Pulls Out of HQ2 NYC Plans
Amazon has announced that it has scrapped its plans to set up a second headquarters in New York.

(CCM) — Months after announcing that it would be opening a second headquarters, or HQ2, in the New York City neighborhood of Long Island City, Queens, Amazon has announced that the project has been scrapped. Amazon's official statement suggests that the decision is the result of dissent coming from state and local government as well as residents.

"For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term," the statement said. "While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City."

This project was the result of a nationwide campaign for Amazon to select a spot to settle down and provide roughly 25,000 jobs. In return, the company was being awarded several million in tax breaks and other incentives.

Amazon has stated that it would not continue its search for a home for HQ2. Instead, it will "proceed as planned in Northern Virginia and Nashville" and focus on its 17 North American corporate offices and tech hubs.
