The new Nighthawk Pro router allows gamers to prioritize game consoles on their home network.

(CCM) — Netgear has the gaming market firmly in its sights with a new router designed specifically for console players, announced this week.

The Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR300 Router has been designed to make playing fast-action console games more enjoyable by reducing ping times and latency on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, and well as PCs and mobile devices.

"With more than 2.3 billion active gamers in the world, online gaming is truly becoming the world’s favorite pastime. As multiplayer online games grow in popularity, it's known that latency kills," David Henry, a Netgear spokesman, explained.

The router improves console gaming performance by providing a gaming dashboard which allows users to optimize their network connection for playing games. For example, it allows users to cut down lag by using geofiltering to ensure that they are matched with other online players who are located nearby, and to reserve bandwidth for specific games or streams.

It also provides control over the upload and download speeds of other devices on the network to prevent sudden latency spikes, and users can restrict applications that would otherwise be using excessive bandwidth.

The Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR300 Router is priced at $200, and will be available in April.
