Nintendo Plans Two New Switch Consoles
Lower cost and more powerful versions of the popular console could be released this summer, according to a report.

(CCM) — Nintendo is planning to release two new variants of its hugely popular Switch game console as early as this summer in an attempt to hoover up customers at the top and bottom ends of the gaming market, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The first model is a beefed-up version of the current console with more powerful hardware, the report says. This is aimed at more serious gamers, although the new console will still not be as capable as Sony's PS4 or Microsoft's Xbox One X.

The second model will come with a lower price tag than the existing version, but will have fewer features. One which is likely to be dropped is controller vibration, a feature which is used heavily in games such as 1-2-Switch and Super Mario Party. But Nintendo "judged the new Switch models won't need the vibration feature because there wouldn't be many games released using the full benefit of it," a supplier said in the report.

The Wall Street Journal added that the new consoles may be announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles in June, with release dates a few months later.

It is not unusual for console manufacturers to release new variants of their products during their lifetimes to take advantage of falling hardware costs or to try and attract new customers for their products.
