Apple Pips Spotify to U.S. Top Spot
Apple Music now has more paid subscribers in the U.S. than Spotify, according to a report.

(CCM) — Apple Music has stolen Spotify's crown as the number one music streaming service in the U.S. in terms of paid subscribers, according to a Reuters report.

Apple boasted 28 million subscribers at the end of February 2019, two million more than arch-rival Spotify, according to a person familiar with the matter. But Spotify still dwarfs Apple Music in terms of total listeners in the U.S., because it has a substantial number of users of its free, ad-supported service.

The situation outside the U.S. is different, and there Spotify still has the advantage over Apple Music in terms of paid subscribers, the report adds. In total Spotify has over 96 million subscribers paying $9.99 per month (or equivalent in local currencies), while the total number of subscribers to Apple Music worldwide is not known, but in May 2018 that figure stood at 50 million.

Apple Music is an important part of Apple's strategy of diversifying its income sources towards subscription services as its core hardware business slows. Last month the company unveiled news, television, and gaming subscriptions, as well as a surprise entry into the credit card market with a new offering in partnership with Goldman Sachs.
