The Unvaulting event resulted in the obliteration of Fortnite's most iconic location.

(CCM) — Season 8 of Epic's Fortnite battle royale game has come to a dramatic close with the eruption of a volcano which obliterated Tilted Towers, the games busiest, and arguably most dangerous, location, The Verge is reporting.

The eruption was the culmination of The Unvaulting, an event which started when a vault in Loot Lake opened, taking players to a new location. Several items that had previously appeared in the game but which had been removed were visible in glass cases, and players worked together in a co-op mode to break one case open and return it to the game. Any characters that were killed during The Unvaulting respawned — a notable change from the rocket launch event last June when players' characters died permanently, much to the frustration of many.

The drum gun was the item that was eventually freed, following which players returned to the island and the volcano blew its top. Tilted Towers is now a smoldering wasteland, and other areas such as Retail Row have also been damaged.

Fortnite's Season 9 is expected to start later this week.
