Sony Shows Off PlayStation 5
Powerful processors will enable the new console to work up to ten times faster than the current PS4.

(CCM) — Sony lifted the kimono on its next-generation PlayStation 5 games console at a corporate strategy presentation this week, offering a glimpse at the blistering speed of the new hardware, Engadget is reporting.

The new console loads games and individual segments up to ten times faster than the current PS4 console, so complex scenes run much faster.

This is possible to a large extent due to the powerful new hardware in the PS5: at its core will lie a third-generation eight-core AMD Ryzen processor built with 7-nanometer Zen 2 microarchitecture, according to the report. This will work in tandem with a custom Radeon Navi graphics processing unit which supports ray tracing, the report adds.

In the presentation Sony promised that the PS5 would offer "seamless" PlayStation Now online performance, in part due to improved cloud infrastructure. Last week Sony announced a partnership with Microsoft to "explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services," and it appears that Sony is counting on this partnership being a success in order to improve the performance of PlayStation Online in time for the new console's expected launch later next year.
