Amazon Debuts Cut-Priced Echo Show 5
The Echo Show 5 features a 5.5-inch screen and is priced at under $90.

(CCM) — Amazon is pushing deeper into the smart display market with a new, smaller, $89 version of the Echo Show which it has named the Echo Show 5.

The Echo Show 5 is equipped with a 5.5-inch screen (compared to the current Echo Show's 10.1-inch screen) offering 960 x 480 resolution, slightly less than the Show's 1280 x 800 resolution. It has a 1 MP camera (compared to the Show's 5 MP camera) and one 4W speaker (compared to the Shows's two 10W drivers plus a passive radiator with Dolby processing). There is also an audio output jack for use with external speakers.

In terms of privacy, the Show 5 is slightly ahead of its larger counterpart. That is thanks to a new physical built-in camera cover in addition to the microphone and camera "off" button. This may have been added because Amazon is pitching the Show 5 as a beside alarm clock replacement, as well as an accessory that can be placed in a home office, kitchen, or living room.

The Echo Show 5 can be used to stream music while displaying song lyrics, viewing input from security cameras including Amazon's Ring video doorbell, and making video calls to the Alexa app, Skype, or other Echo smart displays devices, as well as having the same capabilities as smart speakers such as the Echo and Echo Dot.

The new smart dispaly is available for pre-order now in Charcoal Black or Sandstone White. The first units will be shipped to customers towards the end of June.
