World's First 8K TV Goes On Sale
The LG 88Z9TV will use deep learning to upscale lower resolution content to 8K resolution.

(CCM) — LG has stolen a march on all its competitors in the TV market by taking orders for its 88Z9 8K OLED TV, The Verge is reporting.

The new television has an 88-inch OLED screen offering an 8K Ultra HD 7680 x 4320 resolution display. This resolution has four times the number of pixels of a 4K Ultra HD display, and the OLED panel is the largest ever shipped in a TV by LG, according to the report.

One major drawback for anyone considering purchasing an 8K TV is the lack of 8K content to watch on it, but LG hopes to sidestep this problem by upscaling existing content to 8K resolution. To do this the TV is equipped with an LG Alpha 9 8K processor, which will use deep learning to carry out the upscaling. The TV will also use deep learning to generate virtual 5.1 surround sound with support for Dolby Atmos, the report says.

All this technology is not cheap, and the 88Z9 is priced at an eyewatering 50 million won ($42,000). But LG is offering the TV at the reduced price of 40 million won ($34,000) to anyone placing an order in June, and the company is also throwing in a free air purifier to sweeten the deal further.

The 8K TV will be available in North America and Europe in the third quarter of 2019.
