OPPO Teases Under-Screen Camera
The company has tweeted a video of a prototype OPPO phone with a camera beneath its display.

(CCM) — Chinese smartphone vendor OPPO appears to have won the race to produce a phone with an edge-to-edge display incorporating a camera hidden beneath the screen.

The official OPPO Twitter account tweeted a short video of a phone with a camera under the screen. "For those seeking the perfect, notchless smartphone experience – prepare to be amazed," the company said. "You are taking a very first look at our under-display selfie camera technology."

An under-display camera avoids the need to have an iPhone-style notch or a pop-up sliding camera mechanism to spoil the aesthetic of the design.

OPPO's under-display technology is new, and the quality of the images that is produces do not appear from the video to be particularly high. However it is likely that with further development it will increase significantly.

But one problem that may be difficult to overcome is that users leave their fingerprints on displays as they use their smartphones, and these fingerprints will inevitably effect picture quality.

OPPO has been a pioneer of a number of smartphone innovations, including ultra-fast Super VOOC charging and periscope lenses, which have made their way into shipping products. So it is likely that the under-display camera technology will make its debut on an OPPO phone in the near future.
