YouTube Battles Bad Recommendations
Three changes to the video sharing service are designed to make avoiding harmful content easier.

(CCM) — YouTube hopes to reduce the incidence of harmful or inappropriate content being spread by it recommendation algorithms and give more control to viewers over what they are shown, with the introduction of some important changes to the service.

The first change makes it easy for users to tell YouTube to stop suggesting videos from a particular channel, Essam El-Dardiry, a YouTube product manager, said on a blog post. "Just tap the three-dot menu next to a video on the homepage or Up Next, then 'Don't recommend channel,'" he explained. This feature is available now on iOS and Android, and it will be rolled out to the desktop "soon."

Another change will see YouTube provide information about why a video has been recommended when it comes from a channel that a user has not seen before. This will help users find more videos from channels that they like, as well as avoid channels that they find inappropriate to their tastes. This feature is available on iOS now, and it will come to Android and desktop "soon."

A final change is designed to make it easier to explore topics and related videos that users are interested in. "The options that you see are based on your existing personalized suggestions and are meant to help you find what you're looking for faster," El-Daridy said. "They could be videos related to the one you’re watching, videos published by the channel you’re watching, or other topics which may be of interest to you."

This new feature can be found on the homepage by scrolling up and on "Up Next" when browsing, he added. For the moment it is only available to YouTube users who are signed in to the service in English on Android, with iOS and desktop availability and support for other languages coming shortly.
