Electrodes inserted into the brain will let users merge their minds with artificial intelligence, Musk claims.

(CCM) — Tesla boss Elon Musk has unveiled details of his brain-hacking device which is designed to provide a direct interface between human brains and computers and artificial intelligence systems, the BBC is reporting.

Musk's Neuralink company has applied for permission from U.S. regulators to start trialing his device, which has already been tested on a monkey which was able to control a computer with its brain, according to the report.

The Neuralink device uses thousands of probes attached to flexible microfilaments which are inserted into a user's skull to monitor brain activity and stimulate brain cells. The microfilaments are flexible enough to allow for movements of the brain within the skull without damaging it.

Initially Musk wants the device to be available to patients with severe neurological conditions, enabling them to control a computer without having to make any movements. In the long term he hopes that it will allow humans to enhance their brains with direct input from artificial intelligence systems, but he stressed that this is not possible now.

"It's not like suddenly we will have this incredible neural lace and will take over people's brains," he said during a presentation. "It will take a long time."
