The last player standing from over 40 million competitors will win a first prize of $3 million.

(CCM) — The top 100 players of Fortnite, arguably the most popular video game in the world, have come together in New York for a battle royale to fight the chance to become millionaires.

The Fortnite World Cup is the culmination of a knock-out competition which has seen 40 million entrants from over 30 countries whittled down to just one hundred. The winner of the final game of Fortnite will receive $3 million in prize money, three runners up will receive over $1 million each, and all entrants will be guaranteed at least $50,000.

As well as the "solo" or singles category, another "duo" or doubles Fortnite competition will also see the winners awarded $3 million to share.

The esports event is being held at the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium at Flushing Meadows, but the first prize is more than Simona Halep and Novak Djokovic earned for winning the Wimbledon championships.

The World Cup event has been seen by many as an attempt by Fortnite developer Epic Games to revive the game's popularity. Although it remains hugely successful, viewing figures on streaming platform Twitch have begun to flag, according to a CNN report. This is significant because Twitch viewing figures are a good indicator of game popularity.
