PS4 Sets 100 Million Unit Sales Record

PS4 Sets 100 Million Unit Sales Record
The PlayStation 4 has beaten the record set by Nintendo's Wii.

(CCM) — Sony's PlayStation 4 (PS4) games console has become the fastest to make the 100 million unit sales mark, smashing the previous record set by Nintendo's Wii.

The PS4 was launched in November 2013 and racked up 100 million sales in five years and seven months — two months faster than the Nintendo console, according to an Engadget report.

Sales of the console have been strong for almost all of its life, and it is only in the last quarter that they have begun to tail off significantly. This may be due to the fact that Sony's next generation PS5 is due to launch next year, with support for ray-tracing 8K, SSD storage, and PS4 backward compatibility, according to the report.

In total Sony sold 3.2 million PS4s during the quarter ending 30 June 2019, and the company expects sales to decline more than it had previously expected for the rest of the year.

Sony also announced that it sold more games as digital downloads than physical game discs for the first time during the quarter. Digital download sales have been rising sharply over the last few years, but this announcement is likely to plunge the future of physical disc sales into doubt.
