MediaTek Unveils Flagship Gaming Chips
The Helio G90 and G90T chips will be pitched at flagship gaming smartphones.

(CCM) — Taiwan-based chip-maker MediaTek has announced two high-powered mobile processors designed to offer lightning fast performance to smartphone gamers.

The Helio G90 and G90T chips feature octa-core CPUs clocked at 2.05GHz, according to a report in The Verge. These use the same ARM Cortex-A75 and A55 cores as Qualcomm's and Huawei's flagship processors, as well as a Mali G76 GPU running at up to 800MHz. Both chips support up to 10 GB of LPDDR4x RAM.

Both the G90 and the G90T feature MediaTek's "HyperEngine" technology which is designed to increase the performance of smartphone games. Both also support HDR10 and use an "intelligent network prediction engine" which the company claims can spot when Wi-Fi quality is degrading and switch automatically to an LTE connection when possible.

The chips also feature MediaTek's "rapid response engine" which is designed to make touchscreen controls feel more responsive, according to the report.

The launch of the new G-series mobile chips is significant because it marks the first time that MediaTek has launched an all-out assault on the top end of the mobile gaming chip market which has so far been dominated by Qualcomm. Previously MediaTek's chips have found a market in mid-range smartphones such as Xiaomi's Redmi brand of HMD's lower-end Nokia phones, the report adds.
