The initial question sounds as though the hard-drive connection had somehow been knocked loose but if you have a data recovery scenario then it's really best to take the machine to experts to solve it. Hi :) I would boot up from Cd and do a virus scan straight from the Cd, of course this would need to be done using a Linux Cd as i don't think Windows have an option like that. Yes but it's easier to set this up at install to save having to mess around in the scary /etc/fstab. Fstab can make things go badly wrong very easily if you don't know exactly what you are doing. That sounds like something worth taking to a shop to get them to fix it - or perhaps you know someone who is quite good at building computers or messing around with hifi or radios or something. There's a lot of things to be careful of if you want to do this yourself and it could easily lead to some fairly serious harm to your machine...

Most versions of linux (distros) make it easy to open a command-line, just look for the icon that looks like a monitor/tele with a ">" mark in it.
