These are the 30 most anticipated movies of 2024

2023 gave us some great films, from the cultural phenomenon of Barbenheimer, after Barbie and Oppenheimer were released at the same time, to the divisive Saltburn. 2024 looks set to be no different with many hotly anticipated films, including the sequels: Gladiator 2, Dune: Part two, and Deadpool 3. In this article we look at the top 30 upcoming films of 2024.

The Book of Clarence (January 12)

An upcoming biblical comedy-drama, directed by Jeymes Samuel, tells the story of a part-time gladiator caught in the conflict of witnessing Jesus' miracles and trying to show himself as a messiah. The cast includes, LaKeith Stanfield, James McAvoy, Teyana Taylor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Omar Sy and more.

Mean Girls (January 12)

Written by Tina Fey, this adaptation of the Broadway musical of Mean Girls (which was based on the original film stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, wreaking havoc with Regina George (Renée Rapp) after her Burn Book goes viral on social media. The cast includes Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Jenna Fischer, and M.G. O.G. Tim Meadows.

Argylle (February 2)

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, this action comedy follows writer Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) as her bestselling superspy novel mirrors a real-life espionage situation. The A-list cast includes Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, and Ariana DeBose.

Lisa Frankenstein (February 9)

In this darkly comedic tale penned by Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult, Jennifer's Body), Kathryn Newton plays Lisa Swallows, a goth girl who reanimates a corpse (Cole Sprouse) to create her perfect man, leading to unexpected complications and a snarky narrative.

Bob Marley: One Love (February 14)

Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, this long-awaited biopic stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as the iconic Jamaican singer, Bob Marley. The biopic explores his rebel songs, assassination attempt survival and his role as an ambassador for reggae music.

Dune: Part Two (March 1)

One of the most hotly anticipated sequels, Denis Villeneuve returns to complete his sci-fi epic, based on Frank Herbert's saga. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya continue on their mission to take revenge against those who destroyed the Atreides family and save the universe. The star-studded cast includes Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux.

Love Lies Bleeding (March 8)

British filmmaker Rose Glass explores love, sex, and crime in this torrid tale set in New Mexico. Kristen Stewart plays Lou, a gym owner who falls for a bodybuilder, portrayed by Katy O'Brian, with a complex romance threatened by familial connections to the underworld.

Road House (March 21)

Directed by Doug Liman, this remake of the Patrick Swayze classic features Jake Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, a UFC fighter turned "cooler" in the Florida Keys. The film promises to follow three simple rules with a backdrop of bar fights, shootouts, and car chases.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (March 29)

Jason Reitman's sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife sees the return of the next-gen paranormal investigators (Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace) and franchise OGs (Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts), battling supernatural forces threatening New York City.

Mickey 17 (March 29)

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi film stars Robert Pattinson as an astronaut coping with an existential crisis as he gets repeatedly "copied" during a mission to colonize a distant planet.

Challengers (April 26)

Luca Guadagnino's sports drama, starring Zendaya, explores the love triangle between teen tennis phenom Tashi Duncan and two male players, played by Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor, as they navigate love, marriage, and career challenges.

The Fall Guy (May 5)

Directed by David Leitch, this action-comedy stars Ryan Gosling as a stuntman that is tasked by Emily Blunt with investigating the disappearance of his co star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and bringing him back to set.

Back to Black (May 10)

Marisa Abela will take on the role of Amy Winehouse in this biopic that explores the recording of her landmark 2006 album, Back to Black. This album helped make her one of the most famous musicians in recent times.

IF (May 17)

John Krasinski (Jim from the US Office), directs this kid-friendly fantasy which explores the concept of imaginary friends that are still there well into adulthood. The films stars Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming who can see the imaginary friends. The voice cast includes Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridges, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Meloni, Awkwafina, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)

Furiosa featured in Mad Max: Fury Road and was played by Charlize Theron. In this film, a young Furiosa is portrayed by Anna Taylor-Joy in her origin story prequel.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 24)

The fourth installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes takes places 300 years after the death of Andy Serkis' Caesar. The new ape leader is player by Kevin Durand, and the film will follow his quest for weapons, technology and dominance.

Ballerina (June 7)

The first of the proposed John Wick spin-offs, that seek to create the Wick-Verse, follows dancer-assassin Rooney (Ana de Armas) seeking vengeance for her family's murder. The film is set between the third and fourth John Wick movies and we can expect to see John Wick make an appearance. Keanu Reeves, Ian MacShane, Angelica Huston, and Lance Reddick also star.

Bad Boys 4 (June 14)

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunite as Detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett in the fourth installment of the action-comedy franchise, promising the usual mix of humor, shoot-outs, and car chases. This film follows on from Bad Boys for Life.

Inside Out 2 (June 14)

Pixar's sequel explores Riley's life as a young woman, navigating new emotions, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke). The first Inside Out was one of Pixar's most successful recent outings. Fortunately, the original voice cast returns for the sequel, featuring Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, along with new additions Tony Hale and Lisa Lapira.

A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28)

John Krasinski's prequel to the post-apocalyptic thriller series delves into the immediate aftermath of the alien invasion. Lupita Nyong'o and Alex Wolff star in a film likely to explore confusion, panic, and the origins of the deadly creatures.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. (2024)

Eddie Murphy returns as Axel Foley, investigating the death of an old friend in ritzy Beverly Hills, uncovering corruption within the local police ranks. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, and Kevin Bacon join the cast.

Deadpool 3 (July 26)

Alien: Romulus (August 16)

Denzel Washington produces and directs this adaptation of August Wilson's work, exploring the conflict between two siblings (John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler) over their family's heirloom piano. Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Fisher, Corey Hawkins, and Erika Badu round out the cast.

Brad Pitt and George Clooney star as professional "fixers" hired for the same job in this action film helmed by Jon Watts. Amy Ryan adds to the cast, promising well-choreographed mayhem.

Mufasa: The Lion King (December 20)

Directed by Barry Jenkins, this prequel to The Lion King explores the journey of Simba's father, Mufasa, to becoming the true king. Jenkins promises a mix of laughs, tears, and memorable music numbers.
