Android Users Have Been Waiting for This: Charging Improvements Are Coming Soon

The next version of Android is set to enhance smartphone battery charging. Here's what we can expect.

Currently, Android lags behind in fast charging capabilities. The standard power Android recognizes as "fast charging" is 7.5W, which is far behind the significant advancements in the modern industry. For instance, many smartphones now support up to 240W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. However, this is set to change with the next version of Android.

These improvements to fast charging will be added to Android 15, and should increase the charging threshold to 20W. This adjustment was discovered in the latest beta version, marking an important step forward, even though it is not yet active. This change would allow manufacturers to further optimize their own fast charging technologies, thereby improving the user experience. It remains to be seen whether Google will implement the new threshold in an upcoming beta version or wait until the first stable release of Android 15.

The industry now offers devices capable of fast charging with up to 240 watts. The adjustment of Android to 20 watts, discovered in the latest beta version, is therefore an important step forward, even though it is not yet active. Raising the threshold indicates that Google is working on improving charging speed and efficiency.

Even though 20 watts is not the highest value on the market, this development is a significant step forward. Users could enjoy faster charging times without waiting for an update from hardware manufacturers. However, it's not yet confirmed if this change will be available to all users in the final version of Android 15.

Currently, Android 15 is still in the beta phase. However, Google is making rapid progress in its development: the operating system is already in a stable state on Pixel devices, although there are still a few bugs. Beta 3 might be particularly interesting for participants in the beta program.

The good news is that we should see these improvements before the end of the year, most likely from September as new phones are released that are even more capable of fast charging.
