What you wish to do cannot be done with VLC at least not to .avi. Converting to MP4 is the best you can expect.

You are right as I found out just a few minutes ago. I was successful in converting with retention of sound after reading further on the forum and finding advice to reset the audio under preferences. I reset it to play the audio during the whole video and that worked. Thanks.
