Hello,
can someone kindly help:
am tryin to make a cell e.g displaying ELD/001/12/09
the lower cell immediately after it to display ELD/002/12/09

suppose the first sentry 
ELD/001/12/09

is entered in A2 (row 1 is for headings)
IN a3 COPY THIS FORMULA 
="ELD/"&TEXT(MID(A2,5,3)+1,"000")&"/12/09"

note the double quotes
this will become 
ELD/002/12/09


copy A3 down

it will work till the number (001,002 etc till 999)-perhaps you require only upto 031
