Is antivirus needed for windows7

Hello,
Iam using windows7 latest version.without using antivirus the pc is very fast.But recently a problem has been occured.Is the antivirus needed for windows7.please tell me.

virouse is aprogramme. it is buit day by day and they are diffrent and new . so we should updated anti virous to kii new types virous . antivirous provided us up dated to kill new virous. in operating system we could not get this facilities . u think about this.............. need or not. thanks
