Some laptops have to calibrate the battery power meter software or it will not give correct readings. Check your manual to see if this is the case. I had a laptop that required me to fully charge the battery - turn off all power saving settings (like auto shutdown after xx min of inactivity etc) and then wait to fully discharge the battery. Only after this procedure was it able to guess the charge status of the battery.
