Booting to DOS from balck screen toshiba

Hello,

Having some boot issues with Toshiba Laptop. Currently the boot process does not go beyand the Toshiba screen. I have tried the removing battery and power drain to re boot and no luck was trying to find a way around by booting to DOS to give me other avenues to solve problem...scan drives, repair, etc... Any help would be fantastic
