Usually Adobe Reader can open PDF, you may ask your cousin to send you again, sometimes the pdf got damaged in transfer process. Or try to download the PDF again.
If you are using Gmail, click view and it will open in Google docs, I hope this info can help you. Greetings!!! :-)

first scan your computer.then tell your friend to send again the file.if the file is pdf download adobe reader.:D
