System doesn't get boot from cd and HD

Hello,
i bought toshiba L640 a year back and suddenly one day during normal running it got switch off and then after it is flashing error system recovery at the time of startup,boot manager bios menu opens but my system is not getting boot from HD and DVD drive,i am not able to reload window also can't get back my data.
can any body plz tel is there any another way to get my all data back from HD.
can i connect my HD externaly to another laptop?
but how?

You can buy a USB hard drive enclosure to adapt the laptop hardrive to external use. You will need to check to see if the hard drive is IDE or SATA. Then you can buy the right adapter.
