You used a USB converter cable and an external power adapter?
Did you try to connect the USB cable AFTER the PC has booted? You should see a Windows message about a "mass storage device" being detected when you plug the USB cable in.

Thanks for your reply.
The answer is yes to both questions. I connected the usb when the pc was on and did not reboot. I expected that when I insert the us the icon of mass storage device appears like when I insert a pendrive. However nothing appears when inserting the usb for sata.
