On My first computer (a windows 98) I downloaded a lot of music. The songs are MP3 and under the media usage rights it says, this file is not protected. What does this mean and am I in violation of some law.

The file notation gives you no legal standing as to the digital rights to use the file. If you used a file sharing service to download the music you probably never had a legal right to the music. But, no one is going to invade your house to check your computer for illegal files.
