How to extract files from a bad hard didsk

Hello, please, i have a external hard drive with no windows inside, i put all my files there. After using it to work i shut down the pc, the next day i power on the pc, i click to open the drive, i received error message, '' DO YOU WANT TO FORMET THE DRIVE?'' please any idea on how i can extract the files? Thank.

It takes special recovery programs to access a failed drive. I suggest you Google "hard drive recovery" to find a current list of programs.
